Bite

Water Capsules for a Sustainable Future

In an effort to confront the pressing issue of water scarcity and sustainability, 'Bite' emerges as an innovative solution designed to harness atmospheric humidity and transform it into clean, potable water capsules. This design fiction artifact aims to provide an accessible and eco-friendly alternative to traditional water sources, particularly in regions where water is scarce.

Design Inspiration

The Nigerian Influence

Drawing from the streets of Nigeria, where clean drinking water is sold in square plastic bags, 'Bite' reimagines this necessity through a lens of sustainability and convenience. The hawkers' water bags serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of accessibility in water distribution.

Culinary Creativity

The experimental approach of TikTok chef Michael Ligier, who pushes the boundaries of food consumption, has fueled the innovative spirit behind 'Bite', encouraging a rethink of how water can be presented and consumed.

Design Research

Legacy Mapping

The journey began with a brainstorming session that led to the creation of a legacy map for water and water bottles. This process helped to identify the key issues and potential solutions in water sustainability.

Rising Humidity Levels

As part of my design research, I explored the trend of increasing atmospheric humidity, especially in the tropical belt, to understand its potential as a water source in climate-affected areas.

Product Design

The Water Capsule

The water capsule is a marvel of material engineering, consisting of a double barrier created from sodium alginate and calcium chloride. This combination forms a firm, translucent gel wall, perfectly encapsulating the water within.

Dispenser Aesthetics

The dispenser is designed to be easily recognizable, with a water drop filter that signals its purpose to passersby. Its exterior, constructed from recycled metals and equipped with solar panels, reflects its sustainable ethos.

Vision for 2070

In envisioning the year 2070, 'Bite' emerges as a pioneering solution amidst the exacerbated effects of climate change—offering a glimmer of hope through its innovative, free water capsules in an era of intense humidity, soaring temperatures, and water scarcity. This forward-thinking product not only commits to environmental well-being through its mobile dispensers that actively clean and dehumidify the air but also exemplifies ecological stewardship with its reliance on renewable energy and recycled materials, marking a significant stride towards a sustainable and self-reliant future.
